Online training has been around for years, in some cases now used for training credits under the familiar acronym FAD (Distance Learning), and I myself have used it on a few occasions as a learner, but I have always had a lot of resistance to delivering training courses online, because I felt I was losing all the added value of contact with people, of building a relationship with them, in the classroom, in essence of all the richness of exchange, of nonverbal language. I felt like I could only use part of the 5 senses. And in fact in some ways that is also the case.
This is why until a few months ago I always refused to do distance learning, even when it was proposed to me, especially for training physicians on doctor-patient communication. Then, one day, a friend and colleague, Massimo Proietti, introduced me to his project, telling me about his vision of wanting to create an online training platform for a different kind of training, of quality from all points of view, of the content yes, of course, of the competence of the trainers, I would say just as obvious, but also from the point of view of the making of the videos.
Personally, until a few years ago I was struggling to even get my picture taken, let alone do training in front of a camera, without even being able to receive auditory, visual and kinesthetic feedback from the participants! It seemed impossible to say the least.
And I thought about it again yesterday when I listened to a live stream of a La Sapienza professor on LinkedIn, Prof. Marco Stancati, who told the story of a colleague of his, a professor in Law, who these days, forced to adapt and try his hand at lecturing students on the platforms made available by universities for this coronavirus emergency who said that until recently he “considered remote training an actionable offense.”
Here, maybe I was not getting to the concept of offense, but it was a bit like that for me, too, and I reconsidered myself the moment I gave myself the answers to all the why yes, that is, all the good reasons why it makes sense to do online training, indiscriminately with video courses, webinars and whatnot, and I said to myself why not?, giving myself permission to experiment with the curiosity and constant desire to learn that distinguishes me.
The thing I am convinced of is that everything makes sense to the extent that you change the way according to the medium/channel you are using by optimizing its potential. On this Marshall McLuhan I would say has taught enough and many others before and after him.
Certainly it was a challenge and it is a challenge for all those who are approaching it for the first time, as teachers and learners. Certainly in this the younger generation can teach us something.
But it is a challenge I gladly accepted, and today I am proud and happy to have contributed to Different Academy’s project for everything related to NLP – Neuro-linguistic Programming. As of this week, in fact, the first video course, Fundamentals of NLP, has been put online.
