That is the question. Who knows if Hamlet, in our times, would have asked himself this question too!<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem unusual to combine Hamlet\u2019s famous question with Fromm\u2019s, and yet this connection has a lot to do with Coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the answer is as valuable as the question itself, because it holds the reason why I do what I do and why I continue to do it with such passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On other occasions, I\u2019ve already talked to you about the Logical Levels, a model developed by Robert Dilts based on the studies of anthropologist Gregory Bateson, and about how the role of a Coach changes depending on the level on which they are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the logical levels are the different \u201cheights\u201d at which we can experience life, face challenges, and manage change. Every situation can be read on multiple planes. Even Einstein was aware of this, as shown by his famous quote:&nbsp;<strong>\u201cNo problem can be solved on the level at which it was created.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dilts, the lower levels are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capabilities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Behavior<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While the higher levels are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spirit\/Purpose<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beliefs\/Values<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The scale, from the bottom up, is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Spirit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Identity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Beliefs\/Values<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Capabilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Behavior<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Environment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what each level represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Environment<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 the context, answers\u00a0<em>Where?<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>When?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Behavior<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 actions, answers\u00a0<em>What?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capabilities<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 skills and abilities, answers\u00a0<em>How?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beliefs\/Values<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 what motivates you, answers\u00a0<em>Why?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identity<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 who you are (or believe yourself to be), answers\u00a0<em>Who?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spirit<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 the larger system you belong to, answers\u00a0<em>For whom?<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>For what else?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you may be wondering:&nbsp;<em>\u201cYes, but what do these have to do with me?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a practical example using the first 5 levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child gets a bad grade in math. The reason could be\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He stayed up late the night before and went to school tired \u2192 Environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He didn\u2019t study \u2192 Behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He didn\u2019t understand the topic \u2192 Capabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He believes the teacher has it in for him \u2192 Beliefs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He thinks he is stupid \u2192 Identity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why understanding the logical levels can be so useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why do I talk about this so often, even here where I\u2019ve brought together Hamlet and Fromm with their \u201cTo Have or to Be\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cBecause in my life I have experienced the power of coaching, the ability to create transformation, by working on the higher levels: on being itself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, truly discovering who I was and giving voice to that part I had set aside to follow habits and choices that were not entirely mine was a crucial step. Only then could I do what I wanted to do and have what I wanted to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Eastern philosophy, the sequence&nbsp;<strong>Being \u2013 Doing \u2013 Having<\/strong>&nbsp;is the norm.
